How to Get Islip Family Court Records
Family court records in New York are not open to public inspection under Family Court Act Section 166. The law says the court can allow access at its discretion. Parties to the case, their lawyers, and certain authorized agencies can review records under the rules in 22 NYCRR 205.5 without getting a separate court order.
To get copies of orders or filings from your Islip family court case, contact the General Clerk's Office at the Central Islip location. Bring a valid photo ID. You can also email the court at suffolkfamilycourt@nycourts.gov. The fax number is 631-853-4283.
The WebFamily portal lets parties and attorneys search for case information online. You can look up a case by file number or attorney name. The system shows case status, court dates, and case history. Some information may be hidden for privacy reasons, especially in cases involving children.
Note: Court staff can provide procedural guidance but cannot give legal advice about your case.
Islip Family Court Services
The Suffolk County Family Treatment Court is in the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip. This specialized court helps parents who were found neglectful because of substance abuse. It brings together treatment providers, caseworkers, and judicial supervision to help families get back on their feet. The goal is to keep children safe while giving parents a real chance at recovery.
The treatment court uses a strength-based program that respects the dignity of each person. It works with community substance abuse and mental health providers, the Department of Social Services, Department of Health, and Education and Assistance Corp. Participants attend weekly court sessions and receive support from a case manager. CASA workers monitor the children and make sure they are in safe, stable homes.
The court also has a Facility Nursery that can watch up to eight children at a time, ages one to thirteen. It is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Library Resource offices at both Central Islip and Riverhead have court rules, sample forms, and computer workstations for legal research. Do-It-Yourself forms programs help you fill out Family Court paperwork from any internet-connected computer.
Transcripts of court proceedings can be ordered up to five years after a hearing. The General Clerk's Office has a list of authorized transcription firms for electronically recorded proceedings. Rates and turnaround times vary by provider.
Filing Family Court Cases from Islip
Official forms are free from the court or the NYS Courts forms page. Forms are sorted by case type. NYSCEF e-filing is available for custody, visitation, guardianship, paternity, and support cases. The e-filing system is free and works around the clock.
If children are part of your case, address confidentiality is available. Under Family Court Act Section 154-b(2), you can ask the court to keep your address off all court papers. This is important in domestic violence situations. Tell the clerk you want an Address Confidentiality Affidavit. If the judge approves, your address stays off the record.
The New York State Address Confidentiality Program is also an option. It is free for domestic violence victims who have moved or plan to move for safety. If you are approved, your address is kept confidential on court papers, government records, and applications for services.
