The court is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Filing starts at 8:30 a.m. each day. The Onondaga County Courthouse also houses Supreme Court, County Court, and Surrogate's Court, so you can handle several legal needs in one trip.

The court has specialized parts and services built to handle the wide range of family cases that come through. Self-represented people can use the Help Center for form completion and procedural guidance. Under Family Court Act Section 166, records are not open to the general public without the court's permission. Onondaga County Family Court Case Types

The court handles a broad set of family law matters. Cases heard here include abuse and neglect proceedings, adoption, child support establishment and modification, custody and visitation, guardianship, juvenile delinquency, PINS (Persons in Need of Supervision), family offense petitions, paternity, spousal support, and voluntary foster care placement. E-filing through the NYSCEF system is available for some case types. Custody, visitation, guardianship, support, and paternity cases can be filed online. This lets you submit documents any time of day from anywhere with internet access. There is no fee for using NYSCEF itself. For case types not yet on the e-filing system, you file in paper at the courthouse. The court also accepts documents through the Electronic Document Delivery System (EDDS) for certain matters.

Family Court Records Privacy in Onondaga County

Family court records in New York are not fully public. Family Court Act Section 166 says records are not open to indiscriminate public inspection. That does not mean they are sealed or secret. It means the court controls who gets access and when. If you are directly involved in a case, you can request copies at the Record Room. You need to show proof of who you are.

Under Family Court Act Section 216-a, every county has a clerk of court who keeps all records and applies the court's seal. Transcripts are produced by independent transcription services at their own rates.
